A day's feed, and what the hay costs

From the horse's weight, a day's feed at the British Horse Society's figure, and what the hay costs at your price.

kg

From a weighbridge, or from a tape.

Weight from a tape works it out from the girth and the length.

Where this comes from

  • The British Horse Society. Feeding horses, How much should you feed? Read itChecked September 2026. Read again by March 2027.
  • What it counts. Everything eaten in a day: grass, hay and hard feed together. The page says to split that total into what the horse is fed, as the horse needs.
  • Weighed as fed, or dry? The page does not say whether it means the weight as fed or its dry matter. That is to confirm.
  • The hay. What it costs is your own price and your own kilos of hay, worked out: no rule. It is never worked out from the figure above, which may be dry matter. A month here is a twelfth of a year.

Keep this on the horse's record

Put in the hay a day, and it can go on the horse's feed chart as a line.
